How do metaphors and extended metaphors differ?

Metaphors will often only involve one or two comparisons, while extended metaphors can cover pages or even entire stories.

Metaphors are simple comparisons. They only compare a few things at a time:

“She was their light, their sun, their sky.”

Here, the woman is being compared to three things. But it is only a simple metaphor because it doesn’t go on for too long.

Extended metaphors compare the same thing repetitively over a few lines, pages, or even whole stories. Example:

“Bobby Holloway says my imagination is a three-hundred-ring circus. Currently I was in ring two hundred and ninety-nine, with elephants dancing and clowns cart wheeling and tigers leaping through rings of fire. The time had come to step back, leave the main tent, go buy some popcorn and a Coke, bliss out, cool down.” (Dean Koontz, Seize the Night. Bantam, 1999)

Here, Koontz is comparing his imagination to a circus. However, he uses multiple sentences to do so.

Statistics and Data Analysis for Evidence-Based Nursing Practice

Please write a one page response to each following discussion question. (3pages total) I expect your response to reflect critical thought based on information from the textbook and from one additional source for each page. That is two references for each question. Whenever possible, try to relate the discussion question to your own experiences. Be sure to appropriately cite and list your references.

1. Discussion Question: Briefly describe the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics (textbook, page 5). Describe a research situation where either the descriptive or inferential category would be appropriate. (Week 2 Discussion: Chapter 1)

2. Discussion Question: Starting on page 22, your textbook talks about four types of measurement scales. If you were going to create a few survey questions, which measurement scale might you most likely use as the basis for your response choices? Why? (Week 3 Discussion: Chapter 2)

3. Discussion Question: Provide a general explanation of probability and give an example that highlights Marginal Probability, Conditional Probability (Week 4 Discussion: Chapter 3)

Argument evaluation is important in everyday life to help you communicate effectively with others, and to function in the world around you.

This assignment requires you to evaluate a written argument through identifying the claim and the supporting evidence. First, identify the type of claim (see Toulmin Model, Chaper 1), then evaluate the claim/argument by determining whether the author supported it using credible defense.

Select an article from one of the themes on the Argument Evaluation Topic List.

Read the article, and use the tips provided on p. 171 in Ch. 5 and p. 229 in Ch. 7 of Elements of Argument to evaluate the effectiveness of the author’s claim and analyze the supporting evidence.

Write a minimum 350-word summary of your evaluation.  In no more than 1 page double-spaced, include the following language and details:

  • Identify and define (using the texbook) the type of claim given in the article.
  • Identify the author’s claim, and determine the argument.
  • Identify and analyze the supporting evidence connected to the claim.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the support used to defend the author’s claim.
  • Respond to the argument (in third person point of view) based on your evaluation. Use the tips in Ch. 4 of Elements of Argument for guidance on how to form your response.

Format your summary according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.

Include an APA-formatted title page. Any ideas used from the textbook or the individual article should be cited appropriately using in-text citations, as well as a references page citation. Use the Reference and Citation Generator in the Center for Writing Excellence for assistance with citations, if necessary.

The Argument Evaluation and Response Grading Guide will be used to grade your assignment.

Submit your assignment to the Assignment Files tab.
