Absence Culture vs. Absence Policy

An absence culture refers to an organizational culture in which a certain degree of employee absenteeism has become accepted as the norm. An absence policy refers to an organization’s guidelines, expectations, and consequences for employee absenteeism.

B. Robert is feeling very tired today and decides not to come into work. His supervisor tells him that he shouldn’t worry about coming in and that he will see him tomorrow.

Scenario 2: Absence Policy

A. In Frank’s place of employment, there are many policies that reward employee attendance. So, despite that Frank is not feeling well, he decides to go to work because he is looking forward to receiving his yearly bonus for perfect attendance.

B. Sarah is afraid to be absent from her place of employment. She is worried about possibly becoming ill and having to deal with various penalties. Some penalties include being written up or being placed on probation.
