Guidelines

Before you begin, remember to review the class Discussion Board Guidelines.

Your original post, in response to the discussion prompt above, should contain a minimum of 125 words, not including restatement of questions or reference sections. Utilize critical thinking, and support your work with additional resources as applicable.

In addition, read and respond to the posts of two of your peers. Your response must be 100 words, substantive, and expand the discussion.

Finally, any content that is paraphrased, summarized or quoted in your discussion post or response must be must be cited using APA format. For more information on APA format, review the OWL Guide: APA General Format

Discussions are fundamental to shared learning, so please be sure to participate early and often!

Discussions are fundamental to shared learning, so please be sure to participate early and often!

After you have completed the Reading, and without reviewing your classmate’s responses, post your initial response to the following Discussion. Your post should be at least 200-250 words in length and should extend the discussion of the group supported by your course materials and/or other appropriate resources.

After you have submitted your initial post, take time to review your classmates’ responses and to respond specifically and substantially to at least two of them. Refer to the Discussion Rubric in Course Resources for specific grading explanation.

Attention

In this week’s Reading you learned about the topic of divided attention — when you try to pay attention to more than one thing at a time. This is something you do all the time, however the psychological research suggests you may not be as good at this as you think you are.

For this Discussion, describe an example of an everyday situation where you might engage in divided attention. Discuss whether you think it is possible to pay attention to more than one task at a time, using the information from this week’s Reading to support your answer.

RESPONSE 1: MEGAN

Hello class,

Between work, school, kids, and life overall, I feel as if my senses are overloaded with excess amounts of stimuli. I have a difficult time concentrating, and performing well at my tasks at hand. For example, mornings consist of getting myself ready, in addition to my two children. Often, I’m trying to multitask by packing lunches, making breakfast, feeding the animals, and answering messages or emails off my phone. I learned from our unit reading, research does not support multitasking; typically performing one task at a time is a more effective and accurate way to focus one’s attention. (Matlin, M. W., Farmer, T. A. (2016). Which leads me to mention selective-attention, this is when a person pays attention to certain kinds of information, while ignoring other ongoing information. As my son is talking to me about Minecraft mods and creepers, my daughter is adding to the conversation by telling me about a bizarre dream she had! I navigate and decipher what’s most important, respond and act accordingly, all while continuing our morning routine. I find myself facing divided attention tasks frequently, and try to respond appropriately to each message. Although my attention is not capable of handling these challenging tasks. I try to remember the importance of tackling life one day, and one task at a time. As a single, working mother I feel the weight of responsibility. Like many other parents, we are pulled in 500 directions and attempt to concur the world. We must remember to take it slow, and focus on what’s most important.

You are trying to decide which pay package is best. One way to compare the two packages is to see how much Vandelay Industries’ newest team member must sell for the pay from the two packages to be equal. Set the equations from Pay Package One and Pay Package Two equal to each other and solve for s, sales for the week. Show the equation and all work. In your opinion, which package would be the best deal for you? Why?

RESPONSE DAILIA:

Package One=Package Two

500+0.08s=250+0.8s

500=250+0.08s

250=0.08s

S=4,800

In my opinion I would choose package one because the salary is higher.

Discussion Guidelines

In this unit’s Discussion, you will interact with your classmates on the course content. Remember, your goal for Discussion Assignments is to ensure that:

  • Responses are on topic, original, and contribute to the quality of the Discussion.
  • Responses make frequent, informed references to unit material.
  • Responses are clearly written.
  • You submit two or more Discussion Board responses to classmates as described in the Discussion Question that are thoughtful and advance the Discussion.

Keep in mind that when you post, you should include references to the textbook and any material found online. The class is all about sharing knowledge, so use Discussions as a way of creating a community resource for yourself and your classmates.

For Pay Package One, you will be paid a weekly salary and a percentage of your sales. To determine your pay, use the equation, P = w + rs, where P is your pay, w is your weekly salary, r is the commission rate (written as a decimal) you earn on sales, and s is your sales for the week

assignment:

Linear equations allow us to use math to model the real world. Linear equations can be used to determine the sale price of a sweater on clearance, the cost of a taxi ride, how many yards of material you need to make a banner for the football team, or how many plants to buy to border a walkway. On the Unit 3 Discussion Board, we will use what we know about linear equations to prepare for a salary negotiation.

Congratulations! You got the call. You are the newest sales rep for Vandelay Industries. You have an appointment with your manager next week to negotiate your pay package. Thanks to the Unit 3 Discussion Board, YOU are going to be prepared!

  • Choose a weekly salary, w, between $200 and $500.
  • Choose a commission rate, r, between 2% and 10%.
  • Choose sales between $10,000 and $100,000.

Calculate your pay for Pay Package One making sure to show the original equation and all steps to solve the equation. Review an example of a response for this Discussion.

RESPONSE PATRICIA:

W= 400

R= 8% = 0.08

S= 70,000

P = W + RS

P = 400 + 0.08(70,000)

P = 400 + 5,600

P = $6,000

The Pay for Pay Package One is $6,000

Explain the effects that the stereotype has on both males and females in your culture. Think in terms of the impact on family, school, work, health, sexual behaviors and attitudes, and so forth.

gender Stereotyping

Gender stereotyping reflects the perceived psychological traits and characteristics of males and females and the related roles that are thought to be appropriate for each gender in the family, work, school, and society as a whole. Gender stereotyping impacts individuals in terms of how they view themselves and their place in society, as well as how society views the respective gender and the appropriate behavior and roles for each. The implications can be far reaching.

It is evident by studying history that gender stereotypes have changed over time. One obvious example is in the history of women’s suffrage. At one time, it was believed in the United States that women were not sufficiently mentally astute to vote on the important issues impacting society. A woman’s place was thought to be in the home raising children and taking care of the domestic needs of the family. With women’s suffrage in the early 20th century and the century that has followed, this stereotype has been changed. Not only do women vote, but they hold every office at all levels including heads of state and presidencies around the globe.

In this Assignment, you will explore gender stereotypes in some depth, including a consideration of the numerous stereotypes for both men and women and how these stereotypes impact individuals of that gender, the opposite gender, and society as a whole.

To prepare

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on gender stereotyping, the impact it may have on society and individuals, and cultural differences and similarities in gender stereotyping.
  • Think about the following questions:
    • What are common stereotypes for men?
    • What are common stereotypes for women?
    • How have these stereotypes changed over time? What stereotypes have not really changed?
    • What impact do these stereotypes have on individuals of that gender, the opposite gender, and society as a whole? Think in terms of the life of the individuals, the families, school life and the educational journey, work life and career options, health and wellness issues, sexual attitudes and behaviors, and so forth.
    • Consider whether and how any of the stereotypes have impacted you personally.
    • What impact has the media had on perpetuating gender stereotypes?

Write a 1- to 3-page paper in which you describe a gender stereotype that exists in your culture and analyze it as follows:

  • Explain the effects that the stereotype has on both males and females in your culture. Think in terms of the impact on family, school, work, health, sexual behaviors and attitudes, and so forth.
  • Explain what perpetuates the stereotype.
  • Explain how, if at all, this stereotype has impacted you personally.

Recognizing that this area of the brain is known to regulate aggressive behaviors in animals (the research is less clear for humans), should Whitman be held fully responsible for his actions? Why or why not?

Module 2 Discussion Assignment

Details Chapter 2

The Case of Charles Whitman

Watch the video on Charles Whitman before responding to discussion question.

(Charles Whitman – The Killing of America) (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA4M04prVK8

As a child and young man, Charles Whitman was kind, quiet, and known by all as a “good boy” serving as both an altar boy and an Eagle Scout. As a student at the University of Texas, however, he began to experience severe headaches, assaulted his wife, and became involved in numerous fights. He confided to his psychiatrist that he was fighting the urge toward even more extreme violent behavior. He lost the fight. Climbing to the top of the campus observation tower with a high-powered rifle, he shot wildly at his fellow students, ultimately killing 14 people and wounding more than 20 before the police finally killed him. An autopsy on Whitman’s body revealed a large tumor pressing against his amygdala.

1. Recognizing that this area of the brain is known to regulate aggressive behaviors in animals (the research is less clear for humans), should Whitman be held fully responsible for his actions? Why or why not?

2. If Whitman had lived, would you have been in favor of capital punishment or life imprisonment for his crimes?

3. Imagine that scientists were able to identify specific genes linked to serious criminal behavior and it was possible to remove or redesign these genes. Are you in favor of this type of gene manipulation? Why or why not?

You will benefit most from completing Seminar option 1. However, if you are unable to attend you have the opportunity to make up the points by listening to the Seminar archive and writing a paper summarizing the Seminar.
