CPD portfolio

The purpose of this task is for you to provide evidence of your approach to continuous professional development using the CIPD profession map for guidance. The task includes a number of activities which should be presented in a CPD portfolio. It is important to set the scene of your personal learning journey in an introduction section of the portfolio. So this task is split into four different activities, three activities you will submit shortly, Activity 4 you will submit at the end of your programme.

So in terms of the CPD portfolio, we would encourage you to produce this as a well labelled and presented word document with a front cover, contents page, completed activities, and supporting evidence.

Activity 1, within Task 2, covers AC 3.1: Explore how the role of a people professional is evolving and the implications that has for continued professional development. And the task is split into three distinct questions. How is the role of the people professional changing? What impact are these changes having on our CPD? What are the key characteristics of good practice CPD? I would start with a blank page in Word with the heading: Activity 1, and then I would produce these questions with answers underneath.

For Question 1, you could consider how the people professional is changing and is moving away from an admin-type role to a much more people-focussed, more technology savvy and more specialist role. Think about the people practice roles within your own organisation.

Do you have a Chief Happiness Officer or Chief Heart Officer? Or what about Lead People Data Scientist? Look at how job titles have changed to reflect the changing role of the people professional. What impact do these changes have on your own CPD. For example, if you wanted the job role of Lead People Data Scientist, what development activities would you need to invest in?

How is this different to where you are now? How does this link to the CIPD profession map? The final question asks you to consider the key characteristics of good practice CPD. What is good practice CIPD?

The campus has some good examples of CPD and reflective practice. Revisit these, and then review the characteristics that you feel are important. For example, you might consider that regular reflective practice is important. You should discuss at least three different characteristics of good practice CPD.

Task 2, Activity 2 is a self assessment, which covers AC 3.3: Formulate a range of formal and informal continuing professional development (CPD) activities to support your learning journey. And CIPD have provided you with a self-assessment template to use, which we will review in the next slide. You need to read all of the requirements in terms of the task that are shown on the slide. However, in your word document, ‘CPD portfolio’, I would start another new page and I would use the subheading ‘Activity 2 Self Assessment’. I would download Appendix 1 from the campus and complete this as evidence of your own assessment.

You need to copy and paste this self-assessment into your CPD portfolio under the heading on this page. The CIPD have identified a number of questions for you to answer against the professional standard, and therefore you should use this to self assess and provide a score in one of the first three boxes.

You must add reason for judgement. E.g. why have you given yourself a score of twenty against the question relating to making responsible choices?

The justification can be brief but does need to be included.

I’m just going to show you Appendix 1, which is the questions that you will answer and you will score yourself against, giving a reason for the judgement. You need to collect at least two other pieces of authenticated feedback in terms of your own strengths and weaknesses as a people professional. This can be from peers, line managers or customers. You will need these in the next section.

You should copy and paste the authenticated feedback emails from peers, line managers, customers into the self-assessment word document. On a new page in the CPD word document, use the self-assessment and feedback you have received to identify at least three different strengths and weaknesses from the information you have collected. These weaknesses should be used to develop your objectives, which should be included in the personal development plan. You should write three objectives to be included in your personal development plan, and you should explain how you consider you can meet these.

For example, if one of your weaknesses is raising concerns with others, how would you develop this from a weakness into a strength? What learning opportunities are available to you? You could consider coaching from within the workplace. How effective will this be? How does it support your learning journey? And as you would have seen on the previous slide, there was a copy of the personal development plan that you can use in your portfolio. These can all be downloaded from campus. So do use the documentation that we have provided you with.

Activity 3 of Task 2 covers AC 1.4 and 2.4: Reflect how you have taken responsibility for your own work or actions, including recognisng rectifying mistakes and reflecting on your own approach to working inclusively and building positive relationships with others. Activity 3 requires you to reflect on two different scenarios. Therefore, on a new page in your word document, reflect on two specific scenarios. Think of one scenario at work where you have had to take responsibility for your own work and actions.

For example, you might have been asked to complete a project within specific timescales and you could use this as your example. The scenario you decide to use needs to include a reflection on any mistakes you have made. Think about how you took responsibility for your own work. For example, clarifying requirements or being clear about ethics and values, or ensuring that you have the capabilities to complete the project in line with time management and agreed timescales.

You need to reflect on any mistakes that you have made and how you took responsibility for these. For example, identifying options to correct your mistakes or agreeing on the best course of action. You also need to add in what you have learnt from this experience with specific examples.

For the second part of this task, you need to identify two examples that highlight your approach to working inclusively. For example, where you have recognised the value of diversity within the workplace or where you have actively sought and listened to views. I would write this is Example 1 and then Example 2, with subheadings and your answers underneath. Within each of the two examples, you need to discuss how you build positive working relationships with others.

What did you do? What skills and behaviours did you demonstrate? Identify at least two specific skills and behaviours, and you could relate this to the CPD profession map.

Be specific, save this document and upload for marking. This is the end of Activity 3.

  • – highlight the topics
  • – include introduction and conclusion
  • – references and in text citation as Harvard, not dated more than 5 years
  • – the appendixes (self assessment) information reflect the documents.
