The number of mentally ill offenders continues to grow in our criminal justice system. They would have once been in state psychiatric hospitals, but are now in state prisons. These inmates present special problems and concerns, both for themselves and for staff.
Conduct an Internet search regarding this population and in a two-page paper, answer the following questions:
- Why are the mentally ill behind bars?
- What challenges do the mentally ill present to prison administrators and staff?
- What are two or three possible solutions to this problem?
