The first question is worth 25 points: Look at your notes on the literary movement American Naturalism.
Can “The Open Boat” be considered a naturalist text? Why or why not?

You may prepare this answer beforehand, and upload it. Remember to make it in our class format: normal margins, 12 point, Times New Roman, double spaced.

Please limit this response to 1.5 pages maximum. You should only use your notes on Naturalism and what is available on Canvas to answer this question.

Your second question is worth 45 points: Examine how nature is discussed throughout “The Open Boat.” Look at the literary critical piece by Anthony Channell Hilfer. Once you have established your own ideas, consider how Hilfer discusses nature in the short story and analyze ONE of the following questions: What does nature mean to the men aboard the boat?

OR

Do their perceptions of nature shift throughout the story? Why or why not?

You need to look through to see how Hilfer’s argument aligns with your own. If it doesn’t then you need to say that it does not and why. You will be expected to cite one quotation from the piece to support your points. Again, this can be done in advance and uploaded into the appropriate question.

Your answer should not exceed 2 double spaced pages.
