For the first passage, break the passage down, and determine its effectiveness. Pay close attention to the descriptive writing, word choice, sentences, and sensory information.
For the second passage, analyze a particular dialogue exchange. What is being conveyed here? Is the dialogue effective? Is it moving the plot of the story forward? Revealing characterization? Neither? Look at the formatting and word choice. Is the exchange effective, and if so, what subtleties do you detect that make it so? If not, why/how is the exchange not successful?
In each case, include the entire passage, if brief, or enough for us to identify with your findings. Include terms from your reading and/or lecture notes to analyze the effectiveness of the descriptions.
