A successful interview leads you to securing a dream internship or even a job offer. Interviews are just like a date that makes the interviewee nervous, expected, or even scared. As a result, well preparation will be the most significant element that makes you feel confident during the interview.
To help you have a successful and well-prepared interview, I have developed some strategies that are based on my experiences as the human resource department intern, where I have done many research on how to be successful to your interview. Mental preparation, do your homework, and practice are the three strategies for an effective interviewing techniques from preparation.
Mental Preparation
Before the preparation, first you must have a good attitude towards the interview. Generating positivity towards yourself and the upcoming interview will increase your self-esteem and to cope with any fear and nervousness that you may have. As of course, the position that you are seeking may also be seek by others; therefore, you must go in with a best expression of yourself and don’t be afraid of failure.
Do Your Homework
Research is a crucial element in a successful interview preparation. Collecting the company’s background information and then evaluate yourself including your own knowledge, skills and abilities. After that, think about how qualify you are for this opportunity.
Finding out as much as you can about the company’s past performance and future plans will make your interview more cooperative and could help you succeed in a competitive job market. Spending your time on visiting the company’s website and review the company’s annual report. Understand the product, service, and the management for your position. Besides, thinking about the possible expending future in your position. After that, you should be able to talk in deep about the industry, and the position that you are apply for. Moreover, use the LinkedIn or Google to get the extra information about the company. Also, don’t be afraid to contact your prospective employer or the current employee to ask the details on the position that you are interviewing for. It will be helpful that you’ll be prepared for answering interviewer’s questions and to ask the interviewer questions.
Practice, Practice, and Practice
Practicing is one of the best ways to prepare for the interview. Practice can makes everything including interview perfect or at least leads to improvement.
Practice answering some typical interview questions. Prepare for a wide variety of questions by thinking about your past successes, work strength, long-term plans on your resume is very important; however, you should need to familiar yourself with some sample questions that most employers are likely to ask at their interviewees. Here are the ten most common questions below:
• Tell me about yourself.
• What are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?
• Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
•What has been your biggest professional achievement?
•What have you learned from your mistakes?
•Why attracted you to the company/position? Why do you want to work for us??
•What do you know about our company so far?
•Why should we hire you? Why are you the best person for the job?
• What salary range are you looking for?
• What questions do you have for me?
Remember to rehearse your answers out loud. Moreover, you can practice in front of the mirrors, or your peers and families. Also, you can record yourself practicing the interview on a videotape and play them back. Get some advices from your peers and families. Consider to check your eye contact, body language and hand gesture on the video to avoid inappropriate language. After that, analyze yours answering see if you sound confident and accurate.
Practices answering the questions over and over again until your answers fly off your tongue automatically. The more you practice, the better you’ll get and the more comfortable you’ll feel. Securing an interview with any organization, institution or company is a great privilege in the first place. Therefore, upon securing this opportunity, one should be keen and careful in order to impress the people on the interviewing panel. A good presentation of oneself is thus necessary since it is the first step that might determine the consideration for either the internship or the job. Therefore, it is the duty of the interview to do the following things in order to get the attention of the people on the panel carrying out the interview exercise (Linderholm par 2). Dress Code
This is another important issue an interviewee should keenly observe on the day of the interview. The dressing should be in correspondence with the culture of the organization, and thus one should be having some information about through prior research. Depending on the appearance of the company’s culture, whether professional or semi casual clothing, all the same one should be smart and very presentable (Linderholm par 3).
The reason for it is that in most cases, the panelists being human beings are likely to judge the interviewee from the outlook. Therefore, it is better for the interviewee to be overdressed than underdressed on the day of the interview. For instance men should be dressed in well ironed shirts, a tie, well fitting trousers and well polished official shoes. It is worth noting that good grooming will give the person being interviewed some confidence as opposed to when one is dressed shabbily. For ladies a good dress code would be well ironed fitting blouse and a fitting skirt preferably slightly longer than the knees. The modern fashion of very short skirts also known as mini skirts is not impressing when it comes to an interview and this should be avoided at all costs. ……. Punctuality
During the day of job interview, one should be conscious of time and be very punctual to avoid arriving at the venue late. This could be made possible by resting early the previous day to avoid waking up late and maybe when already exhausted. For instance, those people who have problems catching their sleep early, they should try their best and retire to bed earlier than normal in order not to delay in waking up.
Another thing to be considered on the day of the interview is that one should ensure that they get a well-balanced breakfast because of the uncertainty of the day ahead, which might be hectic and exhaustive throughout (Richard 14). It is therefore advised for one to take a light and balanced breakfast like tea, bread and some fruits. Avoid heavy breakfasts like Ugali that is likely to cause one to doze off during the interview. Lack of entering the venue of interview early is likely to make one become nervous and thus score poorly in the interview. The reason for this the first question one might ask is if at all one cannot keep the time for the interview then definitely this could be extended to the place of work. Mental Preparation
Since the interviewee is not so sure of what the panelists might ask during the interview, it is good for one to prepare for anything that might come along the way. By anticipating anything, even outside the context of the interview, one will be thoroughly equipped and ready for any kind of conversation. In the long run, one will be relaxed and expect any topic to be brought about during the interview process. However, it is good to note one should only respond to the questions that he or she is sure about, and avoid trying to impress the panel by pretending to understand everything (Linderholm par 3). One should be ready to admit in the event that he or she asked something that is not familiar and if given chance be able to seek for clarification. By doing this, one will be seen as genuine and ready to learn where necessary. Normalcy
This is also another important thing that should be practiced by the interviewee on the material. Being natural, composure and focused will enable the interviewee stick to the agenda of the day, and thus performs well during the interview process. One should be able to understand that interview process is not a matter of life and death. Therefore, one should be natural by doing the normal things like exchanging pleasantries with the panelists. Breathing would work miracles where one relaxes and maintain a close eye contact with the people carrying out the interview.
In the event that one seems to be nervous, he or she can request for time off in order to relax and be composed. By doing this, one is likely to gain confidence, and even be free to ask interviewers some questions at the end of the interview process. This might involve seeking some clarifications where the person did not understand. However, this should be done in a decent manner in order not to look like one is attacking the panelists (Richard 22). Creation and Presentation of the Resume
Development and presentation of ones resume is one of the important things that a person should do during the day of the interview. Since the panelist will be having an overview of the resume it upon the interview to initiate a healthy conversation to enable them understands better. What Things You Should Do After a Job Interview:
Interviews are there to test our knowledge and skills on a certain field. Additionally, the interview tests behaviors and personal qualities that prove that interviewees are ready for the task. Therefore, interviewees prepare adequately for the occasion. An interviewee might find it easy to go through the whole process, and come out with a smile or the entire occasion might be stressful. However, the interviewee should remember there is life after an interview; thus prepare to move on with life as soon as they leave an interview room (Gottesman, Deb and Buzz12). The interview should try to remember some of the elementary things that he has learnt from the previous interview, and prepare adequately for the next interview. One should remember that an interview is not a job; therefore, whether questions were simple or difficult, there is a need to prepare for the upcoming interview. After an interview, one can sit down write down some of the essential things that he has leant. This is because the mind cannot keep and retain information for a long period. The fundamental things that one should note down are (1). Any question that disturbed you and you think you could have provided the most appropriate response.(2) Issues that arose during the interview(3) Documents that you provided to the interviewer. Gottesman, Deb and Buzz have provided things that an interview should do after attending the job interview, and these include; make a follow up, Reflect on it, work on other leads, stay off the social media, leverage outside recourses and accept the regret.
Make a follow up.
It is essential to follow up after the job interview. The most significant step is to write to the hiring manager and thank him for finding time to discuss with you (Gottesman, Deb and Buzz 34). This requires that you collect the business card after the interview so that you can contact the manager. When you follow up, the manager creates in mind that you are probably the strongest candidate, and you are willing to work with the organization. You can an email, a letter or a note to each one that interviewed you. An example of the thank you note is illustrated below:

Thank you very much for giving me an opportunity to attend an interview. It was really an exciting experience. Thank you very much. I look forward to hearing a lot from you.

It appropriate is for an interviewer to reflect on the experience that he has gone through so that to evaluate and be able to work on them (McDowell and Laakman 13). This entails, evaluating the most exciting part, the most challenging part and how you can change the challenging bit. It is essential that interviewer begins with the most exciting bit this creates the mood for him to analyze the challenging bit, and as a result, be able to rectify mistakes for future interviews. In case, you do not feel well identify exactly what went wrong in the interview this will make you focus on the issue and work out the way forward. Do not follow in the self-pity instead learn from them, and prepare how you will handle the interview next time.
Work on other leads
A job interview is not a job itself. Unless, one receives the calling letter of accepting or rejecting the offer, he should continue searching for the job (McDowell and Laakmann 23). As soon as you are through with one interview, you start focusing on looking for the next interview. You must bear in mind that searching a job is not an easy thing; thus going for one or two interviews is not enough. Carry out more research on the job market, and do not feel frustrated to go for another interview if the opportunity comes. Remember never to reject any lead that would provide you an opportunity of getting another job. This is significant as in case you do not sail in previous interview, you stand another chance of getting a job in another organization.
Stay off the social media
The modern technology has created various avenues that make us communicate easily with your friends (Hering and Yattte 45). Although, this is an appropriate means of communication, it essential that one thinks deeply before writing anything on the social media. It is tempting for an interviewer to jump to twitter, facebook or Skype, and comment about the interview. Remember as you tell your friends and relatives about your feeling and how interviewees treated you, your interviews might also be viewing; consequently, they will be interested in knowing comments. In the event, you comment negatively about the company or some of the interviewees, then you there will no job for you in that organization, even if interviews rank you as the person with the highest score (Hering and Yatte 78). Even if you were to comment positively about the company, there are chances that employers will not pick on you as most of them do not like the job affairs to be broadcast. They consider this as unethical and unprofessional. Therefore, for you to be safe try to stay off from the social media. This is an excellent example of communication on the Twitter; Hate that man. He asked me serious questions. I wish he were not in that organization.
Leverage outside resources
Sometimes you may be lucky that you go to an interview, and you find out that one of people in the panel is familiar to you. It is necessary that you inform him immediately after the interview (Hering and Yatte38). He might say a good word about you, and change minds of other interviewees.
Accept the rejection.
If the company does not hire you, accept and move with searching for another job. Also remember, to keep in contact with the organization.
In conclusion, the interview experience is an opportunity for one to grow. Therefore, people should take the challenge and work on them so that they can improve both skills and behaviors. Works Cited
