Summary Response Essay #2 Directions

Readings:

·         “The Look” by Larry Lehna (handout)

·         “Writing Summaries” Handout

Assignment:

Write a summary response essay of either “The Look” presenting the main idea, minor points, and your response, interpretation.  The majority of the essay must be in your own wording, but you will need to include a few direct quotes to support your thesis.  Your goal is to summarize the article so that someone who has never read it is able to understand it.

Structure

·         Essay must contain the following paragraphs

o   Introduction with thesis (at the very end of the paragraph)

o   1st Body Paragraph (subtopic #1)

o   2nd Body Paragraph (subtopic #2)

o   3rd Body Paragraph (subtopic #3)

o   Conclusion – this is your response, interpretation of the essay. 

·         MLA Format – including heading, no cover sheet, and Works Cited Page

·         Must be at least 800 words (not including Heading and Works Cited)

Support

·         Must incorporate at least two direct quotes but no more than 30 words of direct quotes.

·         Quotes must be integrated into your sentences and documented correctly.  You will only need the page number in each in-text citation since you introduce the author in the introduction.

Tone

·         Incorporate an elevated vocabulary (Ex. positive vs. good)

·         Vary sentence structure (complex and compound sentences)

·         Do not use 2nd person (you, your, yours)

·         Only use 1st person in the conclusion (I, me, my, mine)

Conclusion

·         Conclude the essay with your interpretation of the essay.  What do you think of his/her experiences?  Do you agree with their views?  Why or why not?  (Review the Summary Response PowerPoint if needed.
